WHAT IS TMJ DISORDER?
Your temporomandibular joints (TMJ) are located on either side of your jaw and include a series of muscles, ligaments, discs and bones. Together, they work to help you move your jaw when chewing, swallowing or speaking. When problems arise with your TMJ, pain can result and is often referred to as TMJ disorder. Your jaw pain can be caused by several conditions such as:
- Grinding your teeth due to stress
- Misalignment of the jaw or teeth
- An injury to the head or jaw
- Arthritis, or other diseases that affect the muscles, joints or ligaments
- Jaw dislocation
If you experience difficulty with jaw movement, pain or hear a popping or clicking noise when moving your mouth, be sure to let us know. You may have TMJ disorder or “TMD”. Dr. Danner can examine your mouth and jaw to see how your teeth close together. He may also recommend dental x-rays to better evaluate your problem. If you have TMD, help (and relief) are available.
TREATING YOUR TMJ SYMPTOMS
You may find that your TMJ issues flare up from time to time, especially during periods of stress. To treat your discomfort, Dr. Danner will work with you to design a treatment plan that meets your unique needs. Medications to reduce pain and inflammation, a special night guard to protect your teeth and exercises to strengthen your muscles may be recommended. In some cases, easing your symptoms is as simple as orthodontic therapy, to correct your bite and teeth alignment.
WHAT CAN YOU DO TO EASE SYMPTOMS AT HOME?
A combination of home care and professional treatment is often most successful. Along with advanced TMJ therapy from Dr. Danner, we often recommend:
- Applying ice or heat packs to ease discomfort
- Avoid chewing gum
- Eat soft foods to minimize irritation
- Over-the-counter pain relievers, as needed
- Stress-relieving exercises or meditation to ease tension
