What are Wisdom Teeth?
Your wisdom teeth are the third and final set of molars to develop later in life. Some people are able to keep their wisdom teeth and never experience any complications from them. However, there are many others who develop painful swelling and even infection with these molars.
There are several dental health issues that may require your wisdom teeth to be extracted, such as:
- An Abscess – When tooth pulp (or other tissues) in the wisdom tooth becomes infected, an abscess can develop along the gums
- Teeth Crowding – Wisdom teeth have a tendency to grow at an angle under the gums, crowding healthy teeth together and putting them at risk of damage
- Other Infections – When wisdom teeth grow into, or “impact” against your other teeth, it makes them difficult to clean and provides an environment for bacteria to flourish
Treatment for Wisdom Teeth
Removing wisdom teeth is a very common dental procedure. At Advanced Dental Arts our dentist will perform an initial evaluation, take necessary images to determine the health and position of your wisdom teeth, and discuss the findings with you. If they believe your oral health will benefit from extraction of your wisdom teeth, they will discuss your treatment options and develop a care plan that is right for you. But don’t worry – thanks to options like IV sedation and oral sedation, you can “nap” right through the entire visit.
Advanced Dental Arts is a multi-specialty clinic, serving all of Manhattan. We are committed to treating every aspect of your dental health. If you are experiencing any complications with your wisdom teeth, or would like to schedule an appointment to determine your oral health, please call us today.
