Sedation is an option that allows our patients to be unaware and comfortable throughout their dental procedures. We offer a few different levels of sedation within the office. Our doctors work closely with the needs of each individual patient to determine the level of sedation that works best for them. Some patients prefer to be completely unaware and “asleep” throughout the entire duration of the procedure. This is called IV Sedation. The patient receives a sedative drug administered by a board certified Anesthesiologist through their veins. This allows the medication to work quickly and efficiently. In this controlled environment, patients are monitored closely and the level of sedation can be customized according to the patient’s response.
If you have a fear of visiting the dentist, Advanced Dental Arts in New York City can help you comfortably complete necessary procedures. Have no fear, our certified dentists and licensed anesthesiologist can safely help you relax during each of your visits with us, whether it’s for you or your child. Some reasons why you may want to consider sedation dentistry include:
- Anxiety about visiting the dentist, or a previous bad experience
- Sensitive teeth
- Low pain tolerance
- Sensitive gag reflex
- A large amount of dental work that needs to be performed at once
A board-certified anesthesiologist accompanies our Advanced Dental Arts specialists to administer the sedative via an IV. Due to the medication being delivered directly to the bloodstream, it takes effect fairly quickly. The doctors are able to adjust the level of sedation as needed, providing a comfortable experience for the duration of treatment. IV sedation offers the deepest level of relaxation available.
Oral Conscious Sedation
A prescription sedative is administered by mouth, which is taken about an hour in advance of treatment. The medication will make you feel drowsy, but still able to respond consciously during treatment. This moderate sedation provides a relaxing experience throughout treatment and wears off after a few hours.
Nitrous Oxide Sedation
Also known as “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide is inhaled through a small mask placed over the nose. This simple delivery provides a relaxing effect, and can be adjusted throughout the appointment by the dentist. Nitrous oxide sedation clears from the system quickly, leaving you with no lingering effects after the treatment.
